The PrairieWorks Difference
Many landscape companies offer “native” plants and ”prairie” installations. However, we have noticed that many of the processes used are exhaustive and the species utilized in these situations are not native, lack diversity or are not the best plant for the site conditions. Prairie Works specializes in native plants and conservation issues with ecological health as the overall goal and provides the most accurate product in this line of service.
Plant Material - Prairie Works does not use varieties or cultivars of native plants or species that are nonspecifically native to the United States or the Midwest. Instead, we use true native species which were historically from a project’s specific county and we choose the best species for the soil type, moisture and sun requirements.
Native Seed - We install seed that has been collected as close to each project as possible. This is known as “local genotype” seed. When using local genotype seed the resulting plant is more accustomed to the weather extremities and soil types of the site, resulting in a more successful project. On the other hand, many landscape companies that are trying to emulate prairie restorations use species that were grown outside of the Midwest and the plants struggle to complete their lifecycles in our region.
Vendors - All seed, plant, equipment and consumables vendors are all local-based and usually small, family-owned businesses, never large corporations. These businesses share the same values and science-based methods in their respected operations.
Organic Methods -Organic methods are utilized whenever possible. The client has the option of requesting this before the project begins and then restoration is conducted in that manner throughout the duration of the project. However, there are some cases, such as invasive species control, where organic control may not be possible.
Low Impact - We are conscientious of not disturbing the land and its inhabitants. Utilizing hand tools and not heavy machinery in sensitive areas and intelligent timing of activity’s to not harm flora and fauna, is important during the logistics of a restoration process. Being aware of bird, animal, plant and weather cycles and not billing schedules, is one way PrairieWorks can keep everything happy.
Environmentally Friendly Consumables - Prairie Works uses BioBlend brand lubricants in all of its engines and on all moving parts such as chain saw bar oil. BioBlend is readily bio-degradable and minimally disturbs vegetation, wildlife and nearby water sources.
